As you wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, you’ll unearth a treasure trove of historical sites, winding alleyways, and vibrant local culture.

Steeped in a rich history dating back to the time of the ancient Greeks, this well-preserved medieval city draws visitors from around the world to bask in its charming atmosphere and awe-inspiring architecture.

You’ll be surrounded by enchanting stone buildings and the intricate detailing of Rhodes’ impressive past.

Some landmarks stand out prominently in my memory – the towering Palace of the Grand Master, the emblematic Street of the Knights, and the time-telling medieval clock tower.

Walking through this UNESCO World Heritage site always feels like a masterclass in history and art, and I often feel as though I’ve been transported back in time.

Of course, Rhodes Old Town is not just about history. Alongside the mesmerising blend of Byzantine, Gothic, and Ottoman architecture, you’ll also find a thriving modern scene.

I’ve cherished moments sipping coffee in bustling cafes, navigating the lively markets, and indulging in the delectable local fare.

How to get to Rhodes Old Town

To reach Rhodes Old Town, you need to first fly into Rhodes International Airport (RHO), which is well-connected to many European destinations.

Airlines such as British Airways, TUI, and easyJet offer regular flights to Rhodes. From the airport, you have several options for reaching the Old Town.

One option is to take a taxi. The journey from the airport to the Old Town takes 20-25 minutes and costs roughly £25-£35.

Alternatively, you can rent a car from one of the many agencies at the airport. This way, you’ll have the flexibility to drive around and explore Rhodes at your leisure.

Another option is the public bus. Buses from Rhodes Airport to Rhodes Town are available every hour during high season.

The trip takes around 40 minutes and costs around £3 per person. The bus station is a short walk from the Old Town, making it a convenient choice for travellers on a budget.

If you’re arriving by ferry from other Greek islands, the Port of Rhodes is where you’ll disembark.

Many shipping companies operate between Rhodes and other Dodecanese islands, as well as the Greek mainland.

Once in Rhodes Old Town, getting around is quite simple. The Old Town is pedestrian-friendly, and you can easily explore the narrow streets and historical sites on foot.

However, keep in mind that some areas have stone pavements and steps, making comfortable walking shoes a must.

How to get around Rhodes Old Town

Navigating Rhodes Old Town can be an enjoyable experience while exploring its rich history.

Due to its narrow streets and preserved architecture, I’d recommend walking as the most popular and convenient means of transport.

Within the medieval walls, it’s simple to navigate the main sites as they are in close proximity.

In case you want to cover longer distances or explore the surrounding areas, consider hiring a bicycle or scooter. Several rental shops can be found around the city.

Riding a bike will give you more flexibility and the chance to discover hidden gems around Rhodes Old Town.

Insider travel tip: You can hire a buggy tour in Rhodes Old Town so you can zip around the town quicker than you can on foot. This is ideal for those with accessibility issues, or if you simply don’t want to work up a sweat walking around – I don’t blame you!

How long to spend in Rhodes Old Town

When planning your visit to Rhodes Old Town, I’d recommend allocating enough time to truly experience its rich history, architecture, and charm.

Generally, I’d aim to dedicate at least one full day to exploring the Old Town. This will allow you sufficient time to visit the main attractions, such as the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, and the Archaeological Museum.

However, if you truly want to appreciate the beauty and charm of Rhodes Old Town, I’d suggest extending your stay to two or three days.

This will give you a more relaxed pace to explore the fascinating winding streets, grand squares, and hidden corners outside of the main tourist areas.

Ultimately, the length of your stay largely depends on your interests and how in-depth you wish to explore this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site.

By dedicating a full day or more to Rhodes Old Town, you can fully appreciate its exceptionally well-preserved cultural heritage, making your visit a truly unforgettable experience.

4. Tour the Jewish Quarter

The Jewish Quarter, called “La Juderia,” was a thriving part of medieval Rhodes.
