Oh and let’s not forget that afternoon tea in Burford is a must too!
With all that in mind, let’s dive into my favourite places to eat in Burford.
Pubs & restaurants in Burford
1. The Mermaid
Address: 78 High St, Burford OX18 4QF
Best for: A historic inn
The Mermaid is an 18th century pub that serves up classic British pub grub in front of imposing fireplaces in a characterful atmosphere.
In the winter, I adore how cosy it is indoors with real ales and warming fires; but in summer, I’d recommend ordering a jug of Pimms and heading outside.
The menu features traditional favourites such as bangers and mash, steak and kidney pie, and Sunday roasts. All prepared with fresh, local ingredients.
2. The Cotswold Arms
Address: 46 High St, Burford OX18 4QF
Best for: A cosy pub
The Cotswold Arms is one of my favourite Burford pubs. The outside is always inviting, with a display of vibrant red leaves in autumn creeping up the golden Cotswolds stone.
It’s definitely a pub to get a picture of from the outside!
Inside, you’ll receive a friendly welcome and excellently executed British dishes, such as beef and ale pie or fish and chips. Veggies and vegans are well catered for too.
A word of warning though – pick your night, as this is a popular pub with locals for music and sports.
3. The Highway Inn
Address: 117 High Street, Burford OX18 4RG
Best for: Hearty food
The Highway Inn has a popular restaurant and I can see why it’s so loved. Enjoy the atmosphere in the historic building while tucking into good food.
The menu offers a mix of traditional British and modern European dishes, with highlights including lamb shank with rosemary jus and pan-seared sea bass.
For those with a sweet tooth, you can look forward to indulging in sweet classics like sticky toffee puddings.
4. The Lamb Inn
Address: Sheep St, Burford OX18 4LR
Best for: High quality dining
The Lamb Inn is one of my favourite hotels in Burford – but it’s also home to one of the best restaurants in Burford.
This Old English Inn is a place where you can expect modern seasonal dishes beautifully presented accompanied by excellent service.
The menu changes regularly to reflect the freshest local produce, with dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, venison medallions, and lemon posset.
I recommend dining al fresco if the weather permits, as there is a beautiful walled garden.
5. The Bay Tree Hotel
Address: 12 Sheep St, Burford OX18 4LW
Best for: Local ingredients
Dinners, as well as afternoon teas, are served at The Bay Tree Hotel. Expect a charming atmosphere with stylish, welcoming decor.
THe dinner menu features refined British cuisine with a twist, such as slow-cooked pork belly, herb-crusted lamb, and delicious rich chocolate fondant.
You’ll also find a hearty traditional Sunday roast here that comes highly recommended.
Plus, I’m pleased to say that your dog can come too!
6. The Spice Lounge
Address: 81 High Street, Burford OX18 4QA
Best for: Indian cuisine
For those who adore Indian cuisine, I’d recommend enjoying an organic curry healthily prepared at The Spice Lounge on the High Street.
The menu offers a wide range of traditional Indian dishes, including fragrant biryanis, creamy kormas and spicy vindaloos.
The restaurant prides itself on using organic ingredients and minimal oil, ensuring a delicious yet healthy dining experience.
7. The Angel at Burford
Address: 14 Witney St, Burford OX18 4SN
Best for: Seasonal dishes
With a clutch of awards under its belt and an AA rosette, chef Mike Burkert serves up tasty and well-presented fresh seasonal dishes.
The Angel’s menu features a blend of classic British and contemporary European cuisine.
Standout dishes include pan-fried duck breast, grilled sea bream, or an indulgent cheese board. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
8. The Priory
Address: 37 High Street, Burford OX18 4QA
Best for: A relaxed atmosphere
The Priory is a pretty little restaurant in Burford that offers a varied menu, as well as café-style food.
The daytime menu includes hearty breakfasts, light lunches, and afternoon teas. While the evening menu features dishes like roast lamb rump, pan-roasted salmon and homemade pies.
With a relaxed atmosphere and charming decor, it makes a lovely place to unwind.
9. Lynwood & Co
Address: 134 High Street, Burford OX184QU
Best for: Toasties
A local’s favourite, Lynwood & Co serve up delicious in-house made cakes, as well as sandwiches and salads.
Trust me when I say that the toasties here are life-changing! (Dramatic? Yes. True? Yes.)
Places for afternoon tea in Burford
10. Huffkins
Address: 98 High St, Burford OX18 4QF
Best for: Afternoon tea
Many of the hotels in Burford offer afternoon tea. However, I’d also recommend trying Huffkins for a traditional cream tea.
A local icon, Huffkins is renowned for its gourmet teas and coffees but also its food, including scrumptious cream teas. A traditional tea room and bakery, I think this is a must-do in Burford.
Huffkins is also wonderful for loading up a hamper for a picnic to enjoy down by the river.
Other places that are essential for stocking up for a picnic are Mrs Bumbles and The Bakery on the Hill.
