An utterly unforgettable city, I consider Rome to be the perfect destination for an indulgent European city break. 1. J.K. Place Roma

Address: Via di Monte d’Oro, 30, 00186 Roma

Best for: Incredible location

JK Place Roma Bedroom

I’d recommend J.K. Place Roma first and foremost for its outstanding location near the River Tiber. It’s also just a 10 minute walk from key Rome attractions like the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona.

The boutique style property is renowned for its splendid marble bathrooms, original sculptures and works of art.

JK Place Roma Hotel

I have no doubt that this is one of the best luxury boutique hotels in Rome, offering faultless service, squeaky-clean rooms and sublime shared spaces.

The on-site J.K. cafe works equally well as an elegant eatery by day and a highly polished cocktail bar come nightfall.

2. Hotel Vilòn

Address: Via dell’Arancio, 69, 00186 Roma

Best for: Splendour and sophistication

Hotel Vilon

As another of the top 5 star luxury hotels in Rome, Hotel Vilòn is adjacent to the historic Borghese Palace.

Housed in an opulent mansion building, it can be found on a charming cobbled street close to the river.

Hotel Vilon Rome

Despite its central location, the hotel still has a peaceful atmosphere which I love, with extraordinary artworks helping to create an exclusive ambience.

Some rooms and suites offer sweeping views over the city skyline. There is also a stylish restaurant and bar serving a selection of refined Italian cuisine and expertly-mixed drinks.

3. The First Dolce

Address: Via del Corso, 63, 00187 Roma

Best for: Boutique luxury

Positioned on the iconic Via del Corso, The First Roma Dolce is one of the most highly rated luxury boutique hotels in Rome – and I can see why.

With just 23 rooms and suites, the property has an intimate air, which I think is why it’s so well loved.

The eatery here specialises in patisserie. It’s the only place in Rome in which to sample a traditional afternoon tea with Italian flourishes – so if you love your afternoon tea as much as I do, this is the place for you.

Housed in an 18th century palace, The First Roma Dolce offers a range of rooms and suites, some with their own fitness zones so you can work up an appetite for those sumptuous pastries.

4. Maalot Roma

Address: Via delle Muratte, 77, 00187 Roma

Best for: Flawless service

Hotel Maalot

Maalot Roma is just two minutes’ walk from the famous Trevi Fountain and is a smart yet colourful property.

The decor effortlessly blends the classic and the contemporary. Think zebra-print scatter cushions and art gallery style walls bedecked with an eclectic mix of images.

The hotel’s ground floor bar and restaurant has a welcoming neighbourhood vibe. I’d say it’s one of the area’s most popular venues for sampling authentic Roman dishes and enjoying elegant cocktails.

Accommodation is spacious and bright, with each room being uniquely decorated.

5. Villa Spalletti Trivelli

Address: Via Piacenza, 4, 00184 Roma

Best for: Roman villa vibes

Villa Spalletti

Villa Spalletti Trivelli is another of the best luxury hotels in Rome and enjoys a glorious setting in an original Roman villa.

I find the outdoor spaces to be a particular highlight, including Italianate gardens and a terrace with hot tubs. There is also a deluxe spa at the property.

Villa Spalletti Rome

Rooms are furnished with a seamless blend of antique furnishings and ultra modern touches. While the Trevi Fountain is just five minutes’ walk from the hotel.

The setting is remarkable, opposite the Quirinale Presidential Palace and public gardens. Even the structure itself is a stunning sight, especially when lit up by night.

6. Residenza Napoleone III

Address: Via della Fontanella di Borghese, 56, 00186 Roma

Best for: A royal stay

Residenza Napoleone III

Residenza Napoleone III is one of the most unique 5 star luxury hotels in Rome. It’s located at the Palazzo Ruspoli dating from the 16th century, which was once home to Emperor Napoleon III.

Entering the property is like stepping back in time, and rather than hotel rooms there are two luxurious apartments.

Residenza Napoleone III Rome

The Napoleone Suite can include the adjoining Blue Room, while the Roof Garden Suite comes with a spacious outdoor terrace overlooking the Italian capital.

I simply adore the fact that your hosts are a real-life Prince and Princess, who generously share their delightful palace with the guests fortunate enough to secure a stay here.

7. Singer Palace Hotel

Address: Via Alessandro Specchi, 10, 00186 Roma

Best for: Ultra modern interiors

Singer Palace Suite Rome

The Singer Palace Hotel enjoys an enviable location within easy walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, shops, the Pantheon, galleries, the Colosseum and more.

With only 30 rooms, this hotel is ultra modern inside, yet located in Rome’s historic centre.

Singer Palace Jims Bar

I love that here, you can enjoy a profound sense of place thanks to the lounge and rooftop restaurant, which offer superlative views over the city.

The name harks back to the early 20th century, when the structure was built by the Singer Corporation to serve as the company’s Roman headquarters.

8. Portrait Roma

Address: Via Bocca di Leone, 23, 00187 Roma

Best for: A tailored luxury experience

Portrait Roma Lungarno Collection

If your dream break in the Italian capital involves staying in a spacious designer suite, then I’d highly recommend Portrait Roma as the ideal choice.

This all-suite property is just three minutes on foot from the Spanish Steps. It’s positioned above the Ferragamo store on fashionable Via Condotti.

There are subtle nods to the Ferragamo brand throughout, such as framed design sketches here and there and shoe silhouettes patterning the lining of the drapes.

The interior is generally light, bright and contemporary, with pops of colour to liven things up.

Service is superb, and the hotel even has its own lifestyle staff to track down the city’s finest attractions, eateries and shops, which I think is so handy!

Book here for free room upgrades and late checkouts.

9. Rocco Forte Hotel De La Ville

Address: Via Sistina, 69, 00187 Roma

Best for: Exceptional amenities

The Rocco Forte Hotel De La Ville is a larger property, and as such offers a wealth of great amenities.

There are two restaurants, a spa, two bars and a gym on site; the latter includes yoga instruction and access to personal trainers.

Hotel de la Ville Bathroom

Perched above the Spanish Steps, I think the location is unparalleled and all rooms and suites have city or courtyard views. Bathrooms contrast rustic terracotta tiling against opulent Italian marble.

The impressive spa is spread over two floors. It includes salt and steam rooms, a Kneipp path, a sauna and a hydromassage pool – this is where you’ll find me!

10. Elizabeth Unique Hotel

Address: Via delle Colonnette, 35, 00186 Roma

Best for: Sleek style

Elizabeth Hotel Rome

Located in a renovated 17th-century palazzo, the Elizabeth Unique Hotel is a stylish contemporary property in the historic heart of the city.

I love that accommodation is sleek and modern with a mid-century twist. Some of the larger suites come with features like spa baths or saunas.

Elizabeth Hotel

Villa Borghese is a 10 minute walk away, and the surrounding locale is awash with swanky eateries, elegant bars and designer stores.

Bacharach bistro and bar, a plush lounge and smart library are available for guests’ use. The Elizabeth Unique Hotel also has a winter garden, which I think is the perfect cosy outdoor space to retreat to.

11. Hotel Locarno

Address: Via della Penna, 22, 00186 Roma

Best for: Celeb spotting

Hotel Locarno Bedroom

This Roman hotel was first opened in the mid-1920s and is thus firmly embedded in the city’s history. Hotel Locarno is spread over two buildings, located just a few minutes’ walk from the Piazza del Popolo.

Accommodation ranges from elegant rooms to a three bedroom suite, and some rooms have marble bathrooms or original period features.

Hotel Locarno Rooftop

The art deco styling creates a refined yet creative atmosphere, and there is a chic tea room as well as a restaurant and bar.

A rooftop terrace and a courtyard provide outdoor spaces for dining, relaxing or socialising. Guests can also borrow bikes on which to explore the ancient city, which I think is a lovely touch.

12. Baglioni Hotel Regina

Address: Via Vittorio Veneto, 72, 00187 Roma

Best for: A designer bolthole

Baglioni Hotel Regina

Situated less than a five minute walk from Villa Borghese, Baglioni Hotel Regina is a smart, designer-style bolthole located in a Roman building dating from 1892.

I simply adore the 1920s-style interior. It’s abundant in glossy marble, rich fabrics, warm woods and glamorous metallics.

While additions like Moroccan and Murano glassware add extra warmth and personality which I think really elevates the space.

Baglioni Hotel Regina Caffe

Guests don’t need to wander far unless they want to, as the on-site restaurant serves up delicious Roman specialities and after-dinner drinks.

Most city sights can be reached via a 10 minute walk from Baglioni Hotel Regina.

13. NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali

Address: Via di S. Eufemia, 19, 00187 Roma

Best for: Archaeologically important location

NH Collection Rome

This is one of Rome’s newest hotel openings, yet is positioned in the most archaeologically important part of the city.

The Roma Fori Imperiali borders both Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum, and has a rooftop cocktail bar offering breathtaking panoramas.

Some rooms also come complete with views over ancient Roman ruins, which I think is utterly wonderful.

NH Collection Fori Imperia

Oro Bistrot on the ground floor showcases fine Italian cuisine, and a range of rooms and suites are spread over six floors.

When it comes to successfully combining the ancient and the modern, I believe this hotel can barely be bettered.

14. Hassler Roma

Address: Piazza della Trinità dei Monti, 6, 00187 Roma

Best for: Breathtaking views

Hassler Roma

Only a minute’s walk from the Spanish Steps, Hassler Roma offers attentive service, fabulous food and a range of beautifully maintained accommodation.

Despite its refined looks, I love that it has a welcoming, laid-back ambience making guests feel at home as soon as they walk through the door.

Hassler Roma - Villa Medici Penthouse

The hotel overlooks the Piazza di Spagna and key city sights like the Trevi Fountain and Villa Borghese can easily be reached on foot.

Some rooms and the penthouse floor restaurant offer views over the city’s famous domes and spires.

15. Fendi Private Suites

Address: Via della Fontanella di Borghese, 48, 00186 Roma

Best for: Exclusivity

Fendi Suites Rome

The Fendi Private Suites in Rome are located above the city’s flagship Fendi store, and make a seriously stylish place to stay.

All accommodation is in suites, with some featuring original Karl Lagerfeld photos or stunning views over the city.

Fendi Private Suite

There is a Japanese fusion eatery at the property and this has a rooftop terrace for summer dining with a view. With only seven sumptuous suites, I’d recommend this hotel for an exclusive feel.

As you’re unlikely to bump into another guest – except perhaps at Zuma restaurant – I think that this is the perfect place for a most romantic Roman sojourn.

16. Harry’s Bar Trevi Hotel & Restaurant

Address: Via di S. Vincenzo, 10, 00187 Roma

Best for: Proximity to the Trevi Fountain

Harrys Bar Hotel Rome

The name gives the game away when it comes to the location of this Roman hotel. Harry’s Bar Trevi Hotel is only moments away on foot from the Trevi fountain.

Upon rising each day, guests can be wowed by superb city views while enjoying a delicious breakfast on the sunny terrace.

Harrys Bar Hotel

The location is even more historic than the hotel, which belongs to the illustrious group of Harry’s Bars that have since been spawned by the Venetian original.

There is lots of gleaming marble and a soothing neutral colour palette throughout. With under 20 rooms and apartments, I love that this property has a cosy but luxurious ambience.

17. The St Regis Rome

Address: Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, 3, 00185 Roma

Best for: Italian elegance

St Regis Rome

Close to the Piazza Della Repubblica and the Fountain of Moses, St Regis Rome is located inside a palazzo dating from the Belle Epoque era.

From the sweeping staircase to frescoed walls, Murano glass chandeliers, antique furnishings and marble bathrooms, the property is a study in Italian elegance.

St Regis Rome Bedroom

For me, the public spaces are one of the hotel’s key selling points. They include a decadent spa, a lavish ballroom, a stylish bar and a Mediterranean restaurant decorated with original artworks.

Accommodation comprises a range of rooms and suites, some of which feature fireplaces, jacuzzis or butler service.

I’d recommend booking with ASMALLWORLD to get VIP benefits and exclusive perks where available.

18. Rome Cavalieri

Address: Via Alberto Cadlolo, 101, 00136 Roma

Best for: Fine dining

Rome Cavalieri is home to Rome’s only triple Michelin-starred restaurant, so it’s a must for serious foodies like me spending time in the city.

The property occupies a 15-acre hilltop plot overlooking the city, and is thus set among glorious Mediterranean-style gardens.

With the feel of an exclusive retreat, guests can take a welcome break from the frenetic city here, whether enjoying refined dining, the sumptuous spa or relaxing in one of the plush rooms or suites.

The hotel also boasts an impressive private art collection, which I’d recommend spending some time perusing.

Book via Booking.com or access perks like free room upgrades and complimentary breakfast when you book via ASMALLWORLD.

19. Anantara Palazzo Naiadi

Address: P.za della Repubblica, 48, 00185 Roma

Best for: Grandeur

Ananatara Palazzo Naiadi Rome

I love that the exterior of the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi is incredibly grand; it forms a regal, crescent-shaped sweep on the Piazza della Repubblica.

Dating from the 19th century, the pale marble palazzo makes for some fabulous photo opportunities both inside and out.

Ananatara Palazzo Naiadi Luxury Hotel in Rome

Some of the 230 well-appointed rooms come with private balconies, which I’d definitely recommend booking if you can.

The hotel’s amenities also include an outdoor pool, a gym, a champagne bar, a spa and a restaurant. Close by are the Basilica degli Angeli and the Baths of Diocletian.

20. Hotel Palazzo Manfredi

Address: Via Labicana, 125, 00184 Roma

Best for: Colosseum views

Hotel Manfredi

Listed last in this guide, Hotel Palazzo Manfredi is certainly not the least, thanks to the Colosseum views that I think help to make this property truly special.

Add to that five star service and a superb range of opulent accommodation and you have the recipe for the most memorable stay in the Eternal City.

The finish throughout is refined and polished, with marble bathrooms and exquisite modern decor.

Despite all the luxury within, the local Celio neighbourhood is also a draw, packed as it is with authentic and affordable pizzerias, trattorias and bars.
