1. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes in Croatia

I honestly don’t know why more people aren’t talking about The Plitvice Lakes. They are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe – if not the world.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park comprises not just a single lake but a series of small bodies of water interconnected by cascading falls and lush greenery.

Located near the central part of Croatia, the 16 Plitvice Lakes create a mesmerising landscape that travellers can’t help but fall in love with.

It’s so beautiful that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1979.

Aside from the epic scenery, what I also love about the Plitvice Lakes is its walkability. There are pathways throughout the national park, making the caves, waterfalls, and lakes accessible.

Insider tip: If you’re travelling from a nearby city, you can enjoy guided tours from Zagreb, Split and Zadar.

2. Königssee, Germany

Königssee Lake, Germany

Königssee in Berchtesgaden National Park in Germany is a must-visit lake for various reasons.

It lies in a deep cut within sheer limestone mountains, which reflect off the water’s surface. The result is a truly stunning vista unlike any other.

Königssee has a depth of 188m in some parts, meaning there’s plenty of space for Alpine trout to thrive.

I’d recommend visiting the local restaurants surrounding the lake to enjoy the fresh catches of the day. For the full experience consider booking a private day trip to Königssee from nearby Salzburg.

Insider tip: Don’t miss the chance to explore the salt mines while you’re in the area!

3. Lac de Sainte-Croix, France

Lac de Sainte in France

Lac de Sainte-Croix is a reservoir within the Regional Natural Park of Verdon. It’s a magnificent blue lake that’s so big it almost feels like the ocean!

You can relax along one of the three lake beaches as you take in the picturesque rock formations. Or for something more active, I’d recommend hiring a canoe to explore the gorges.

Don’t forget to stop by Pont de Galetas, a beautiful bridge across the canyon where the Verdon River enters the lake.

Insider tip: There’s a pretty historic village nearby, called Bauduen, where you can grab local snacks and drinks.

4. Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled in Slovenia

Lake Bled, or the Green Pearl of Slovenia, is a natural wonder straight out of a fairytale. You’ve almost definitely seen it on Instagram, if you haven’t already visited it!

Its calm waters are surrounded by lush greenery, and you can see the towering Alps in the distance.

The lake has over 19 species of fish and a diverse aquatic plant ecosystem, so it’s very popular with divers.

However, my favourite part of this lake will always be the little island in the middle that looks as though it’s been lifted from the pages of a storybook.

Bled Island, as it’s called, has a wonderful gothic church and wishing bell. You can get to it by riding a gondola and climbing 99 steps!

Insider tip: For a unique experience of the lake, I’d recommend booking a guided kayaking tour in a transparent kayak.

5. Ohrid, North Macedonia

Ohrid Lake in Macedonia

One of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, Ohrid is a captivating destination where extraordinary natural beauty meets historical significance.

Dotted along the lake’s shoreline is a remarkable collection of Byzantine churches, monasteries, and Ottoman architecture.

Cobbled streets and ancient relics add to the unmistakable charm, all against the backdrop of panoramic lake views.

The clear blue waters are perfect for swimming, kayaking and diving – or if you prefer to stay on dry land, the surrounding Galicica National Park is a hiker’s paradise. There are so many activities in this gorgeous part of North Macedonia, whether you’re taking to the water on a boat cruise or embarking on a monastery wine tour!

6. Lago di Braies, Italy

Lago di Braies in Italy

Lago di Braies, or Pragser Wildsee, is a breathtaking lake in the middle of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies National Park.

This lake is world famous for its mirror-like water nestled among limestone peaks and pine trees.

And of course, being located in the Dolomites, the air is as crisp and fresh as it gets!

Insider tip: It does get busy at Lago di Braies, so I’d recommend timing your visit outside of the peak season or early in the morning. You can visit from nearby Venice – if you have time on your trip, I’d suggest booking a day trip to the Dolomites and Lake Braies.

7. Lake Saimaa, Finland

Lake Saimaa in Finland

Lake Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland, with an area of 1,147 square km. Yet, that’s not the only reason it’s one of the best lakes in Europe.

The Great Lake Saimaa system encompasses over 120 lakes, rivers, hills, and forests. It acts as a connection between towns and is a popular attraction among visitors.

Here, you’ll find the cleanest water, lakeside cabins, and tasty local food. You might even be lucky enough to witness the northern lights!

Insider tip: You can actually spot seals in Lake Saimaa! The best way to see them is to book a seal watching cruise.

8. Lake Prespa in Albania, Greece, & North Macedonia

Lake Prespa in Albania, Greece, & North Macedonia

I consider Lake Prespa to be one of the best hidden gems of Europe, as I feel like not many people have heard of it.

It comprises a system of two lakes situated at the borders of Albania, Greece, and North Macedonia.

This pristine lake is surrounded by rugged mountains and is dotted with quaint fishing villages for a wonderfully serene experience.

You can walk across a 700-metre floating bridge to see Basilica Ruins or take a boat ride to find hidden secrets within the lake.

Insider tip: For the more adventurous, be sure to go rafting at the nearby Aliakmonas and Vikos Gorge National Park!

9. Lake Balaton, Hungary

Lake Balaton in Hungary

Lake Batalon is one of Europe’s largest freshwater lakes and a beloved destination for both adventure and relaxation.

Stretching across western Hungary, its shimmering waters are framed by rolling vineyards, charming resort towns, and historic sites.

The lake’s northern shore is known for its wine regions and the picturesque town of Tihany.

The town is home to a stunning abbey overlooking the water and I’d recommend going paddleboarding if you fancy taking to the water.

Meanwhile the southern shore, with its sandy beaches and bustling nightlife, offers a lively contrast. It makes a dreamy day trip from Budapest if you’re after a break from city life.

Insider tip: If you’re in the area, I’d recommend paying a visit to the spa town of Hévíz to bathe in its healing waters.

10. Lake Garda, Italy

Lake Garda in Italy

While Lake Como is the first Italian lake that usually springs to mind, Lake Garda is a close second in terms of popularity.

It’as actually the largest lake in Italy and lies at an elevation of 65 metres between the epic Dolomites and the rolling hills of Lombardy, Trentino, and Veneto.

The lake’s mild climate supports lush gardens and olive groves, creating a Mediterranean ambiance amidst breathtaking alpine scenery.

Farmers in the surrounding area grow the plumpest citrus fruits, and the lake is home to trout and carp. So don’t miss the chance to eat in the restaurants dotted along the lake shores.
