Some say the journey is the reward, and no truer words could be said about train rides. Pick the right express and you’re in for the sight and delight of a lifetime.

Old-world as they seem, trains are a mode of exploration that will never go out of fashion.

1. Glacier Express, Switzerland

Journey info: From the birthplace of Alpine winter tourism, St. Moritz, to the Matterhorn’s homeland, Zermatt.

Glacier Express Switzerland

One of my favourite countries to take the train is Switzerland. The iconic Glacier Express features impressive interiors and sweeping panoramic windows.

There’s a restaurant service offered directly to your seat too. For a truly memorable experience, I’d really recommend treating yourself to Excellence Class.

With a direct view of the Swiss Alps, the deliberately prolonged eight-hour trip lets you relish the breathtaking views.

You’ll see wind-battered mountain fronts, gentle streams, lush meadows, and verdant forests. Plus you’ll pass through an impressive 291 bridges and 91 tunnels!

2. The Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

Journey info: From the bustling Vancouver through the Canadian Rockies to Canada’s first national park, Banff.

The Rocky Mountaineer Canada

The First Passage to the West is the Rocky Mountaineer’s company’s most beloved train journey.

Outfitted with expansive windows and glass-dome ceilings, traversing North America in one of its coaches means you get to see every scenery the railway has to offer.

Starting at Vancouver, the journey takes you directly to the Canadian Rockies, past alpine routes, jaw-dropping canyons, and the British Columbian wilds.

Before reaching Banff, the train briefly halts at Kamloops. During the ride, you can sample Canada’s local beer and snacks.

3. The Hiram Bingham, Peru

Journey info: From the historic Cusco past Peru’s Sacred Valley ending at the landmark sanctuary, Machu Picchu.

The Hiram Bingham, Peru

Named after the American archaeologist Hiram Bingham, this express is often hailed as one of the most luxurious train rides in the world.

It’s not a very long ride, taking only 3 to 4 hours tops, but the sense of camaraderie on board is phenomenal.

The railway takes you from Peru’s historical capital, Cusco, and through the picturesque steep slopes of the Sacred Valley.

You’ll love the open-air setup, the music, and the 5-star meal served by the friendly staff.

4. The Eastern & Oriental Express, Singapore, Malaysia, & Thailand

Journey info: From Singapore’s Woodland Station through the densely forested Malaysian Peninsula and back.

The Eastern & Oriental Express, Singapore, Malaysia, & Thailand

Asia’s most luxurious train, The Eastern & Oriental Express, has resumed operations after its four-year break with a slight change of route and refashioned cars.

The train normally runs from Singapore to Bangkok but will now circle back once it reaches Malaysia.

The journey is as luxurious as ever, with musicians entertaining and Michelin-starred chefs spoiling guests with delectable food.

Snaking from Singapore through untouched Malaysian rainforests home to tapirs, hornbills, and tigers, I say it’s worth every penny.

5. The Flåm Railway, Norway

Journey info: From the charismatic town of Flåm to Norway’s mountainous rooftop village, Myrdal.

The Flåm Railway, Norway

Often touted as one of the most gorgeous train rides in the world, many would visit this part of Norway simply to experience the express.

And it (hands-down) lives up to its expectations. Beautiful villages, flowery meadows, and lush valleys – you’ll get the whole package.

But the higher the train goes the better the scene becomes. From the panoramic windows, you can witness Norway’s allure at its finest.

Think blue sparkling rivers cutting through undulating valleys, past snow-capped mountains, and over heart-stoppingly steep drops.

6. The Maharajas’ Express, India

Journey info: From the capital city, Delhi, through Agra and Balasinor, and ending at India’s culture hub, Mumbai.

The Maharajas' Express, India

This 6-day train tour is simply exceptional. When boarding, guests are greeted with music and garlands of golden marigolds hung around the neck, all while being showered with flower petals.

The cabins inside the rich maroon-gold train exterior are spacious with ample bed space, comfy chairs, and an en suite bathroom.

You’ll wake up to new, breathtaking sights every morning, and savour traditional Indian dishes for an unforgettable experience.

7. The Bernina Express, Switzerland

Journey info: From Chur in Graubünden, the oldest city in Switzerland, to the cultural crossroad of Tirano in northern Italy.

Bernina Express Switzerland

I couldn’t help but include another Swiss train journey in my list.

Ravines cloaked in waterfalls, glittering lakes, frost-capped mountains, quaint Swiss villages, and densely green forests. That’s what awaits you aboard Switzerland’s Bernina Express.

It’s an experience you won’t get tired of, no matter the season. While not quite as luxurious as the Glacier Express, the views are just as epic.

While some snacks are available on board, I’d definitely recommend bringing your own food for this train journey.

8. Kuranda Scenic Railway, Australia

Journey info: From Cairns, home to the Great Barrier Reef, the Kuranda Scenic Railway barrels through Barron Gorge.

Kuranda Scenic Railway, Australia

Sitting 327 metres (1,076 feet) above sea level, the steep Kuranda Scenic Railway is a fantastic journey to end your day after exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

The two-hour ride takes you through the Barron Gorge, where the winding line gives way to ruggedly forested mountain slopes, rolling waterfalls, and thrilling gorges.

At the end of the trip is Kuranda, where you can cuddle adorable koalas!

9. Kandy to Ella Train, Sri Lanka

Journey info: From the sacred city of Kandy to the laid-back vibe of Ella.

Sri Lanka Itinerary – drone shot of Nine Arches Bridge in Ella

Originally built in the 1800s to move coffee and tea, Sri Lanka’s railway system has become increasingly popular with tourists.

This train journey is long but breathtakingly beautiful, and the train speeds you through the country’s most phenomenal sights.

The iconic blue train chugs through the hilly country villages and lush plantations.

10. TranzAlpine, New Zealand

Journey info: From the Garden City of Christchurch to the historic mining town of New Zealand, Greymouth.

TranzAlpine, New Zealand

Although fairly short, the four-and-a-half TranzAlpine journey comes with a lifetime’s worth of memories.

The ride starts with the sweeping vistas of farmlands and the river-braided Canterbury plains. Herds of cattle and sheep are scattered along the way.

Then, after an hour, the train ascends to the frostbitten caps of the Southern Alps, across bridges perched atop deep gorges. Here the view transforms completely.

Then the train descends, corkscrewing through Kaimai, the longest railway tunnel in New Zealand, before opening into a jaw-dropping scene of dazzling lakes and rainforests.
