5 surprisingly tropical places in the UK for a sunny getaway

Kynance Cove in Cornwall

When daydreaming about sandy white beaches, sparkling blue waters, lush landscapes, and diverse flora and fauna, the UK might not be the first place on your mind.

Famous for its dreary grey skies and centuries-old castles and cathedrals, it’s easy to forget that the UK is also an island nation.

With that comes its fair share of Caribbean-like beaches (yes, really!), tropical gardens, idyllic coves, and other holiday-worthy destinations for a dose of sand and sea.

As a sun-loving traveller myself, I’ve come across scenic and summery spots that I can’t wait to share with you.

Here are the best tropical places in the UK for a perfect getaway close to home!

1. Tresco on the Isles of Scilly

Best for: Nature lovers and weary wanderers looking for relaxation

Tresco on Isles of Scilly

Welcome to Tresco, a family-owned island and the second-largest of the outstandingly beautiful, tranquil, and un-spoilt Isles of Scilly.

This subtropical gem has the world-famous Abbey Garden at its heart, boasting a spectacular collection of 20,000 exotic plants from around the world!

The best part about Tresco is that it has a little bit of everything. Known as The Island for All Seasons, it’s also home to secluded beaches, sophisticated cafes, and a soul-soothing spa.

My favourite island activities include exploring the ruins of King Charles’s Castle and Cromwell’s Castle, strolling on the shores of Pentle Bay, and birdwatching on the Great Pool of Tresco.

2. Kynance Cove in Cornwall

Best for: Adventurers, hikers, and thrill-seeking tourists

Kynance Cove in Cornwall

Kynance Cove is where turquoise seas meet white sandy beaches lined with giant, colourful, serpentine rock stacks.

When the tides are low, the dramatic cliffscapes, mysterious sea caves, and picturesque islands are all yours to explore – a haven for those in search of an adventure!

One of the highlights of any visit to Kynance Cove is The Lizard coastal walk, a gorgeous hiking trail around the naturally-rich Lizard Peninsula.

It’s an extraordinary opportunity to take in the cliff-top scenery, spot rare wildflowers, and get to know the place’s interesting coastal history.

This Cornish seaside destination regularly makes it on the list of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it’s easy to see why!

3. St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall

Best for: History buffs, romantics, and fantasy lovers

St Michael's Mount in Cornwall

Step inside a fairytale as you explore the enchanting island of St Michael’s Mount. It’s crowned by a medieval church and castle, with ancient buildings dating as far back as the 12th century!

You can reach the Mount by crossing a cobbled causeway on foot or stepping aboard a ferryboat when the tide is high.

Don’t forget to soak up the coastal vistas, take in the thriving harbour, and get a whiff of the salty sea air as you make your way to the iconic island.

I especially love wandering through the sub-tropical terraced garden and gazing at the view of Mount’s Bay from the castle turrets.

To top off your trip, stop by the Harbour Loft for some afternoon tea, and enjoy the exquisite Cornish teas, cakes, sandwiches, and local fizz!

4. Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight

Best for: Botanists, gardeners, and lovers of warmer weather

Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight

Situated on the southernmost tip of the scenic Isle of Wight and sheltered from the chilly winds by charming chalk hills, the Victorian seaside garden of Ventnor has a microclimate of its own.

It’s 5 degrees warmer than mainland UK, which is how it earned the title Britain’s hottest garden!

The 22-acre botanic garden boasts an impressive collection of more than 30,000 rare plants and trees, from the smallest of succulents and cacti to giant echiums and towering palm trees.

Nearby attractions to explore include the Coastal Path, Steephill Cove, and The Undercliff area.

If you want to get off the beaten track, like me, there are countless garden trails to discover!

After all the adventuring, grab a bite to eat at the cosy Plantation Room Café or try the fresh, garden-grown produce at the Edulis Restaurant.

5. Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall

Best for: City dwellers looking for a tropical escape

Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall

Travel back in time and immerse yourself in the mysterious world of the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Here you’ll find an exotic sub-tropical jungle, romantic Victorian Pleasure Grounds, an interactive Wildlife Project, and the finest productive gardens in Britain await!

Rescued from a wilderness and restored to beauty in 1990, Heligan’s intricate 200-acre gardens are now a paradise for explorers, wildlife watchers, and garden romantics.

Each garden offers its own unique plantings and charm, and there’s never a shortage of intriguing sights to be seen.

I highly recommend going on the Woodland Walk to see the lush Cornish countryside and pass by unforgettable attractions like the Mud Maid, Giant’s Head, and Grey Lady.
