It’s easy to think that you need to travel further afield than Europe to find hot weather in the autumn months – whether it’s the Caribbean, South East Asia or the Middle East. But in actual fact, there are a number of amazing European destinations that are hot in October.
From sun-drenched beaches and historical ruins to rich museums and fun festivals, there’s a treat for everyone on this diverse continent.
If you want to experience Europe in October, here’s a list of my personal favourite autumn destinations.

1. Sicily
Best for: Festivals
Average temperature in October: 19°C – 24°C
Sicily is an ideal destination for October, offering the chance to explore the island’s treasures without worrying about overcrowded sites.
That’s not the only reason I love the island, though. October marks the start of several gourmet festivals, where residents celebrate sausages, honey, wine, and more.
If you’re a foodie, you’ll find Sicily to be a culinary paradise in October.

2. Seville
Best for: Historical sites
Average temperature in October: 14°C – 26°C
I understand that not everyone on a trip is drawn to the beach or a fancy club. Some travellers are eager to explore historical sites and unravel the secrets of medieval eras.
In that case, Seville is the perfect destination for you.
It’s home to the Cathedral of Seville, where Christopher Columbus’s tomb rests, and the Archivo de Indias, which holds crucial documents related to the discovery of America.
3. Crete
Best for: Adventurous holidays
Average temperature in October: 17°C – 23°C
Crete has some of the most stunning beaches in Greece, perfect for a laid-back vacation. But it’s not a city I’d want to visit just to relax.
After all, Crete has a lot to offer its tourists in October, from jeep safari tours and wine tourism to cooking classes and horse riding. So, make sure you take the time to engage in all these activities to make full use of your trip.
4. Madeira
Best for: Hiking
Average temperature in October: 19°C – 26°C
This one is for my athletic friends who love exploring nature on foot. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better hiking destination than Madeira.
I can’t recommend the Vereda do Larano Coastal Trail enough. Stretching from the Village of Machico to Porto da Cruz, this terrain offers you the most scenic views you can see in the area.
I love going for a swim in the ocean in October, getting to enjoy the island’s natural beauty without crowds.
During that time of the year, it’s neither peak tourist season nor low season, so it’s perfect for enjoying smaller crowds and mild weather.
5. Rhodes
Best for: Affordable Greek Islands
Average temperature in October: 19°C – 23°C
Once you set foot on Rhodes Island, I’m sure you’ll be awed by the architectural style that preserves the mediaeval heritage of the island.
Wander the pretty cobbled streets of Lindos and don’t miss the chance to climb to the top of the Lindos Acropolis for epic views.
Stop by St Paul’s Bay for snorkelling in the turquoise waters, or head to Kallithea Springs for a gorgeous sunbathing spot.
You’ll also love exploring the history and culture in Rhodes Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
I’d also recommend a visit to the Valley of Butterflies, where you’ll find lakes, waterfalls, springs and butterflies.
Here’s the cherry on top: Since October is the off-season for the island, you’ll pay lower rates for everything, including flights, hotels, goods, or services.

6. Cyprus
Best for: Beautiful beaches
Average temperature in October: 14°C – 26°C
Cyprus is beautiful in every way. It has breathtaking landscapes, heavenly food, and incredible historical sites. But I have to admit, that’s nothing compared to its waters.
I challenge you to find more stunning beaches than the ones in Cyprus. If you enjoy scuba diving, few experiences beat exploring the Zenobia shipwreck 137 metres underwater.
While you’re there, don’t miss visiting the WaterWold Themed WaterPark. I can’t resist the energetic, light-hearted atmosphere of that place!
7. Canary Islands
Best for: Wonderful beaches
Average temperature in October: 22°C – 26°C
Whether you head to Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, or another of the Canary Islands, you’ll find warm weather and gorgeous hotels.
One of my favourite spots on the Canary Islands is Playa de Las Canteras on Gran Canaria.
There’s something about the contrast between the deep blue water and dark brown sand that enchants me every time I go there.
If you’re into Halloween celebrations, Canarians have their own unique tradition of celebrating “The Day of the Dead.”
As the name suggests, they aim to honour the dead on that day. Families, friends, and neighbours gather to tell stories and jokes about their deceased lovers.
8. Malta
Best for: Culture
Average temperature in October: 18°C – 25°C
As an avid traveller, I like to explore the culture, history, and heritage of every place I visit.
And I can’t think of a better way to learn the history and culture of Malta than the Megalithic Temples.
Beyond culturally rich temples, Malta has incredible beaches with picturesque water.
Golden Bay is one of my favourites. I recommend visiting one of the restaurants, so you can sit back and enjoy a meal by the beach.
I think October is the perfect month to explore the northeastern coast of Malta. From Mistra to Selmun, you’ll see the region’s most scenic views.
9. Ibiza
Best for: Nightlife
Average temperature in October: 15°C – 24°C
Of course, Ibiza is famous for its vibrant nightlife. Once the sun goes down, the city reawakens with electric vibes and energetic clubs.
Whether you’re in the mood for a vibrant party with world-class DJs or a cosy cocktail gathering by the beach, Ibiza is the perfect place to let your hair down.
After finishing all that partying, I recommend going to the Cala Comte beach to unwind. The beautiful turquoise waters and rocky coastline are totally dreamy.
The island’s rugged cliffs are just as breathtaking, offering unforgettable scenic views.
10. Antalya
Best for: Natural views
Average temperature in October: 14°C – 26°C
Antalya is a paradise of rich museums, ancient monuments, and incredible theme parks, but it all pales in comparison to the natural views this city has to offer.
You can’t miss the Kurşunlu Waterfall, with its luscious greenery, clear water, and stunning waterfall. It’s simply indescribable.
The ancient city of Phaselis doesn’t fall short of beauty, either. As a place where authentic architecture sits beside gorgeous waters and vibrant trees, it stands as a symbol of natural beauty.
